A British diplomat in Rome leaves some secret papers in a briefcase in his car. While he is having a drink, a man steals the briefcase. The diplomat calls in Drake, who goes on a chase and finds that the briefcase has been on-sold.

A British diplomat in Rome leaves some secret papers in his briefcase in his car. While he is having a drink with a woman, a man steals the briefcase. He calls in Drake who is an old friend. Drake then goes on a chase and finds that the briefcase has been on-sold to a high-stakes poker player. Drake plays him at poker and wins convincingly. In exchange for the debt, Drake wants the briefcase, only to find it has again been sold, this time to a high-powered criminal. Time is running out for Drake before the papers are again sold, this time to a foreign power.

Synopsis The Paper Chase ()

Top-secret documents are stolen from a diplomat's car in Rome. The diplomat - an acquaintance of John Drake - calls him for help getting them back. Drake flies to Rome and has just 48 hours to recover them.

The frenetic action sees him infiltrating seedy apartments and elegant estates, anteing up in a high-stakes poker gambling den and taking a turn behind the wheel of a go-kart.

This episode was directed by Patrick McGoohan, and was one of the last episodes filmed for the series.

Two co-stars in this episode, who would later work with McGoohan on THE PRISONER - Peter Swanwick (the bald-headed supervisor in THE PRISONER), and Aubrey Morris (one of the three judges in the PRISONER episode DANCE OF THE DEAD) portray characters quite removed from their PRISONER personas.

Swanwick plays Joe- a bit player who Drake meets during a high-stakes poker marathon, and Morris - who plays Tamasio - a street hustler/thief, whose stealing of the diplomat's documents initially puts the episode in motion.

Unlike most previous episodes, this episode has it's tongue firmly in cheek. It's outlandish, over the top, but still pure DANGER MAN - pure Patrick Mcgoohan
